Your wedding party is made up of some of the most important people in your life. They're the friends who have celebrated with you, the family members who have supported you, and the people standing beside you as you begin your next chapter. Planning waht to wear for wedding party photos is an important step in wedding prep.

And when everyone gathers for wedding portraits, what they wear makes a difference.

As a Michigan wedding photographer, I believe beautiful wedding party photographs aren't about making everyone look identical. They're about creating a coordinated, timeless look while allowing each person's personality to shine.

Whether you're planning an elegant ballroom wedding, a romantic countryside celebration, or a Lake Huron waterfront ceremony, here are my favorite tips for helping your wedding party look and feel their best.

1. Coordinate Colors Without Making Everyone Match

One of the most beautiful wedding photography trends is choosing a coordinated color palette instead of requiring every bridesmaid to wear exactly the same dress.

Think soft lavender, sage green, champagne, dusty blue, or sophisticated neutrals.

Different dress styles in complementary shades can create movement and visual interest in your photographs.

The secret is consistency. Choose colors that work together and fabrics that photograph beautifully in your wedding setting.

My photography tip: Before making final decisions, photograph all the fabric swatches together in natural daylight. Colors can look very different in photographs than they do under boutique lighting.

2. What to wear for wedding Party Photos: Choose Bridesmaid Dresses That Flatter Different Body Types

Your bridesmaids don't all have the same body shape, and they shouldn't have to wear the same dress style.

Consider allowing different necklines, sleeve lengths, or silhouettes within your selected color palette.

When someone feels comfortable and confident in their clothing, it shows in their expressions, posture, and photographs.

Remember, your wedding album should capture genuine happiness, not people constantly adjusting uncomfortable dresses.

3. What Should Groomsmen Wear for Wedding Photos?

The gentlemen deserve just as much attention to detail!

Whether you're choosing traditional black tuxedos, charcoal suits, or a relaxed countryside look, consistency is important.

Make sure jackets fit properly through the shoulders, trousers are hemmed correctly, and shirts are pressed.

Coordinate ties, pocket squares, and boutonnieres with the wedding colors.

And don't forget the shoes! Shoes should be polished, appropriate for the setting, and comfortable enough to walk in.

My photography tip: Empty pockets before portraits. Phones, wallets, and keys can create distracting bulges in otherwise beautifully tailored suits.

4. Think About Your Michigan Wedding Location

Michigan offers some extraordinary wedding photography settings, from elegant historic venues to rustic barns, gardens, countryside estates, and the shores of Lake Huron.

But your wedding location should influence your clothing decisions.

For outdoor ceremonies, consider how dresses will move in the wind, whether shoes can handle grass or sand, and how fabrics will feel in changing temperatures.

Michigan weather can be unpredictable, especially during spring and fall weddings.

A beautiful wrap, tailored jacket, or elegant second pair of shoes can make all the difference.

5. Don't Forget the Little Details

Some of the smallest details can have the biggest impact on your wedding photographs.

Before portraits begin, have everyone check for:

  • Hair ties around wrists

  • Smartwatches or distracting accessories

  • Phones and keys in pockets

  • Visible clothing tags

  • Wrinkled shirts or dresses

  • Uneven ties and crooked boutonnieres

  • Sunglasses resting on heads

These little adjustments help create polished, timeless images without unnecessary distractions.

6. Plan for Comfortable Shoes and Movement

Wedding party photography often involves walking, standing, laughing, and moving between locations.

If your wedding includes outdoor portraits, encourage everyone to bring a comfortable pair of shoes.

Bridesmaids can change into heels just before portraits, while groomsmen should break in their dress shoes before the wedding.

Comfort makes a difference. The more relaxed everyone feels, the more natural and joyful your photographs become.

7. Consider the Season When Selecting Wedding Party Attire

Michigan weddings offer four distinctly beautiful seasons, each with its own styling opportunities.

Spring weddings: Soft pastels, romantic fabrics, and light layers complement blooming gardens and fresh greenery.

Summer weddings: Breathable fabrics, flowing dresses, and lighter suits work beautifully for outdoor ceremonies and waterfront celebrations.

Fall weddings: Rich jewel tones, champagne, deep greens, and warm neutrals complement Michigan's colorful countryside.

Winter weddings: Velvet, sophisticated black, deep burgundy, elegant wraps, and textured fabrics create a luxurious seasonal look.

The goal is to choose attire that complements both your wedding vision and the environment.

8. Remember That Your Wedding Party Is Part of Your Story

Years from now, you probably won't remember whether every boutonniere was perfectly positioned.

But you'll remember the laughter, the friendships, the excitement, and the people who stood beside you.

My approach to wedding photography is about creating beautiful, thoughtfully composed portraits while preserving the real personalities and connections that make your celebration special.

A coordinated wedding party creates a beautiful visual foundation. The genuine moments are what make those photographs unforgettable.
