What to Wear for Fall Family Photos: A Cass City Photographer's Style Guide
Expert Styling Tips from a Cass City Photographer on what to wear for Fall Family Photos.
Beautiful family portraits begin with being yourself. The right outfits simply help tell your story.
You've booked your fall family photos. You've picked the date. You're excited. And now your wondering Waht to Wear for fall family photos.

And then it happens.
The dreaded question: WHAT ARE WE ALL GOING TO WEAR?!
Suddenly, you're standing in front of five closets, wondering whether burgundy goes with mustard, whether the kids have shoes that still fit, and why your husband owns seventeen shirts that are somehow all the exact same shade of blue.
Sound familiar?
Don't worry. As a Cass City Photographer serving families throughout Tuscola County and Michigan's Thumb, I've helped families navigate everything from wardrobe decisions to toddlers who suddenly decide pants are optional.
And here's the secret: beautiful family photos don't require matching outfits, expensive clothing, or everyone looking like they stepped out of the same catalog.
They require a little coordination, a few thoughtful colors, and most importantly, a family that looks and feels like themselves.

What to Wear for Fall Family Photos in Michigan
Fall is one of my favorite seasons for family portraits in Michigan. The changing leaves, rich colors, soft light, and cozy textures create a beautiful natural backdrop.
For this family session, photographed at Beechwood Photography's Northwood Lakes access in Cass City, we worked with a palette of burgundy, mustard yellow, cream, and denim.
Notice how everyone looks coordinated, but nobody looks identical?
That's exactly what we're going for.
The mustard blouse brings warmth to the portraits. Burgundy adds depth. Cream softens the overall look, while denim keeps everything relaxed and natural.
The result is a beautiful combination of colors that complements the autumn landscape without competing with it.
Choose a Color Palette, Not Matching Outfits
Let's officially retire the idea that everyone needs to wear matching white shirts and jeans.
Instead, choose three or four colors that work beautifully together.
Some of my favorite fall family photo color combinations include:
Burgundy, mustard, cream, and denim
Rust, oatmeal, olive green, and camel
Navy, dusty blue, ivory, and warm brown
Plum, sage green, champagne, and taupe
Terracotta, soft blush, cream, and chocolate brown
Start with one person's outfit, usually something with a little color or texture, and build everyone else's clothing around it.
And remember: coordinated doesn't mean identical.
Your family has different personalities. Your clothing can reflect that.

Dress for Comfort, Confidence, and Real Life
Here's something I tell my photography clients all the time.
If you're uncomfortable in your outfit, you're probably going to feel uncomfortable in your photographs.
Choose clothing that fits comfortably when you're standing, sitting, walking, bending down, and picking up your children.
For moms, I especially love tops and dresses that offer movement, soft structure, and a flattering silhouette without requiring constant adjustments.
For dads, well-fitting sweaters, casual button-downs, and textured layers photograph beautifully.
For children, choose outfits that allow them to move and play.
Because if your toddler decides to run across the grass halfway through the session, I want to capture that little personality—not spend the entire time worrying about their clothes.
You deserve to love your reflection, not spend your session hiding from the camera.
Layers and Textures Make Fall Family Pictures Beautiful
One of the easiest ways to elevate fall family photography is to incorporate texture.
Think cozy sweaters, soft knits, corduroy, denim, flowing fabrics, and simple accessories.
Textures add visual interest without distracting from the people in the photograph.
Layers are also practical in Michigan, where October weather can apparently experience all four seasons before lunchtime.
A cardigan, sweater, or stylish jacket can keep everyone comfortable while giving us additional outfit variety.
Just avoid oversized clothing that hides your natural shape or bulky layers that overwhelm smaller children.
Why Cloudy Days Are Beautiful for Fall Family Photography
Can we talk about those gorgeous Michigan fall clouds?
Many families worry when they see an overcast forecast before their photography session.
But as a professional photographer, I absolutely love beautiful cloud cover.
Clouds act like a giant natural softbox, spreading light evenly across faces and reducing harsh shadows.
That means less squinting, softer skin tones, and more flexibility with where we photograph.
The photographs from this Northwood Lakes family session are a wonderful example.
The cloudy sky created soft, even lighting, while the colorful trees and peaceful water provided a beautiful autumn backdrop.
So when you see clouds in the forecast, don't panic.
Sometimes the best photography lighting comes with absolutely no sunshine required.

A Tuscola County Photographer's Favorite Fall Portrait Backdrops
One of the things I love about photographing families in Tuscola County is the variety of beautiful natural scenery available right here in Michigan's Thumb.
You don't have to travel hours to find an amazing setting for your family portraits.
At Beechwood Photography's Northwood Lakes access in Cass City, the water, open grassy areas, and seasonal foliage create opportunities for a variety of portraits during one session.
We can photograph the entire family together, capture parents as a couple, create individual portraits of the children, and most importantly, photograph the little interactions that make each family unique.
The beautiful backdrop is simply a bonus.
The real story is always the people in front of my camera.
Don't Forget the Little Moments Between the Poses
Of course, we'll photograph everyone looking at the camera.
Grandma needs that one for her wall.
But some of my favorite family photographs happen between the perfectly posed moments.
A little girl hugging Dad's leg.
Parents laughing together.
Sisters sitting side by side.
A toddler reaching for Mom.
Those are the moments that tell the story of who your family is right now.
And those moments are exactly why I encourage families to choose comfortable clothing and relax during their sessions.
Your family photographs should feel like your family.
Not a performance.
Not a Pinterest competition.
Just you, beautifully photographed.
