From a Newborn Peapod to Family Portraits: Michigan Fall Family Photography

Some photographs stay with you forever.

And sometimes, if you're lucky, the people in those photographs find their way back in front of your camera.

This is one of those stories. ❤️

Michigan fall family photography of parents and their teenage son beside a pond surrounded by colorful autumn trees.

Years ago, I photographed a tiny newborn baby tucked inside a little green peapod.

He was so small.

That photograph became something pretty special. In fact, to this day, his newborn portrait is still hanging in the maternity ward at the hospital in Bad Axe, Michigan.

Think about that for a moment.

All these years later, families welcoming their own babies into the world can still see that photograph.

And that little baby in the peapod?

Well, take a look at him now.

He's a teenager.

And I recently had the opportunity to photograph him again, this time standing beside his parents, surrounded by the beautiful colors of a Michigan autumn.

I'm not going to lie. Moments like this are exactly why I became a photographer.

Michigan Fall Family Photography: The Years Between the Photographs

When I look at these fall family portraits, I see more than three people standing together beside a beautiful pond.

I see a family I've had the privilege of photographing at two very different stages of their lives.

I remember the tiny newborn who once fit inside that green peapod.

And now I'm looking at a young man who is almost grown.

Somewhere between those two photographs were years of birthdays, school mornings, family vacations, holidays, and a million little moments that passed far too quickly.

That's the thing about family photographs.

We take them to remember what everyone looks like today.

But years from now, they become reminders of everything that happened in between.

One Day, These Will Be the Old Photographs

I think about this a lot when I'm photographing families.

Today, you might look at your family portrait and notice your hair, your outfit, or something you wish you had done differently.

But ten or twenty years from now?

You won't be looking at those things.

You'll be looking at how young everyone was.

You'll remember what life felt like during that season.

You'll notice how your son used to smile, how your husband looked at you, or how it felt to have everyone together.

And you might find yourself wishing you could go back to that afternoon, even for just five minutes.

That's why I believe in taking the photographs now.

Not when everyone loses ten pounds.

Not when life slows down.

Not when the kids are older.

Because trust me, they get older faster than you think.

I have the photographs to prove it. Inquire now about Michigan fall family photography events with Beechwood Photography.

Don't Forget the Photographs of Just the Two of You

One of my favorite parts of this fall family session was photographing Mom and Dad together.

Because somewhere along the way, between raising children and managing everything life throws at us, couples sometimes forget to have photographs taken of just themselves.

But your story matters, too.

Before you were Mom and Dad, you were two people who chose each other.

And that deserves to be photographed.

I especially love the playful image from this session.

A little movement. A little laughter. A moment that wasn't about standing perfectly still and smiling at the camera.

Just two people being themselves.

Those are the moments I want families to remember.

Michigan Fall Portraits That Tell Your Family's Story

Michigan's Thumb is an incredible place for family photography.

From the colorful countryside of Tuscola County to the peaceful landscapes of Huron and Sanilac counties, we have beautiful places to create meaningful portraits.

And fall brings something especially lovely to the experience.

The changing leaves, the reflections on the water, and those soft, cloudy Michigan skies create a beautiful backdrop.

But here's what I've learned after more than 25 years as a professional photographer.

The scenery is beautiful.

The lighting matters.

The composition matters.

But the people in the photographs?

They're everything.

Because someday, nobody is going to care whether the leaves were at peak color.

They're going to care about the people standing in front of them.

From Newborn Photography to Family Portraits in Michigan's Thumb

When I photographed that little boy in his green peapod, I couldn't have imagined that years later I'd be photographing him as a teenager.

I certainly couldn't have known that his newborn portrait would still be hanging in a hospital maternity ward all these years later.

And I don't know what the next chapter of his life will look like.

But I do know this.

His family now has another set of photographs to add to their story.

A little baby in a peapod.

A teenager standing beside his parents.

And a whole lot of life in between.

That's pretty special.

And it's a reminder of something I hope every family understands.

You don't realize how important today's photographs will become until today is a memory.
