Huron County Photographer | Fall Extended Family Photos & What to Wear

https://www.beechphoto.com/post/michigan-proposal-photographer-mabelSome families become more than clients. They become part of your story, just as you've been invited to become part of theirs.
As a Huron County Photographer, one of the greatest privileges of my career has been watching families grow, celebrating their milestones, and preserving the moments that become more meaningful with every passing year.
This recent extended family photography session in Ubly, Michigan, was especially close to my heart.
I first photographed this family when the oldest daughter celebrated her Sweet 16 birthday. Over the years, I photographed all three children's senior portraits, and eventually had the honor of photographing both daughters' weddings.
And now, here we are, capturing another beautiful chapter as their family continues to grow.
From teenage milestones and wedding days to grandparents holding their grandchildren, these are the moments that remind me why I've loved being a photographer for more than 25 years.
The greatest reward isn't just creating a beautiful photograph. It's being invited back to capture the next chapter.

A Huron County Photographer Who Has Watched This Family Grow
When I look at this family together, I see so much more than a group of people standing beneath beautiful autumn trees.
I remember the oldest daughter's Sweet 16. I remember photographing the senior portraits of all three children. I remember the excitement of photographing two beautiful weddings.
And now I get to see a new generation growing up in front of my camera.
It's amazing how quickly life moves. One day you're photographing a teenager celebrating her birthday, and before you know it, you're photographing her family years later.
These are the connections that make my work so special.
I don't want families to have beautiful photographs just for today. I want them to have images that become more precious 10, 20, and even 30 years from now.

The Little Girl in Red Deserves Her Own Spotlight
And speaking of the next generation, can we talk about this adorable little girl in red?
Between her sweet expressions, playful personality, and that beautiful red sweater against the fall colors, she was absolutely irresistible in front of the camera.
She even has her own little sneak peek gallery!

What to Wear for Extended Family Photos in Michigan
One of the biggest challenges when planning extended family portraits is deciding what everyone should wear.
When you're coordinating grandparents, adult siblings, spouses, children, and grandchildren, it can feel overwhelming.
But here's my advice after photographing families for more than two decades:
Coordinate. Don't match.
For this Ubly family session, the combination of cranberry red, forest green, denim, and soft neutrals worked beautifully against Michigan's golden autumn leaves.
Everyone looked connected without looking identical.

Huron County Photographer Tips for Coordinating Extended Family Outfits
Start by choosing three or four colors that complement one another.
For fall portraits, I love these combinations:
Cranberry, forest green, cream, and denim: Beautiful with golden and orange autumn leaves.
Rust, camel, chocolate brown, and ivory: Warm and earthy for a countryside setting.
Navy, burgundy, gray, and cream: Classic colors that look wonderful in printed family portraits.
Olive green, tan, oatmeal, and muted gold: Natural, soft colors that complement rural Michigan scenery.
Dusty blue, taupe, ivory, and charcoal: A sophisticated alternative to traditional fall colors.
Rather than asking everyone to wear the same shirt, assign each household a combination from your selected palette.
This creates visual variety while keeping the extended family portrait coordinated.
Start With Mom or Grandma's Outfit
When planning clothing for a large family, I recommend starting with one outfit you absolutely love.
It might be Grandma's favorite sweater, Mom's beautiful dress, or an adorable outfit you've already purchased for a grandchild.
Build the remaining outfits around those colors.
The goal is for everyone to look like they belong in the same photograph while still feeling comfortable and confident.
Add Texture, Layers, and Comfortable Shoes
Fall photography is perfect for cozy sweaters, denim, textured jackets, and soft knits.
These details create dimension in portraits without overwhelming the image.
Avoid oversized logos, neon colors, and too many competing patterns.
And remember that outdoor family photography often involves walking through grass, sitting on blankets, and playing with children.
Comfortable shoes and clothing that allows movement make the entire experience more enjoyable.
Why Huron County Is Worth the Trip for Family Photos Any Time of Year
One of the things I love most about being a Huron County Photographer is the incredible variety of scenery available throughout Michigan's Thumb.
You don't have to wait for peak fall colors to create beautiful family portraits.
From peaceful countryside roads and open farmland to the shores of Lake Huron, this area offers something special in every season.
And for families traveling from Metro Detroit, the Tri-Cities, or other parts of Michigan, a portrait session can become part of a memorable day exploring the Thumb.
Spring Family Photos: Fresh Greenery and New Beginnings
Spring brings soft greenery, budding trees, fresh landscapes, and beautiful natural colors.
It's a lovely season for young families, maternity portraits, and celebrating new beginnings.
The softer spring palette also works beautifully with cream, blush, sage, and light blue clothing.
Summer Family Photos: Lake Huron Beaches and Countryside Evenings
Summer is one of my favorite times to photograph families visiting Michigan's Thumb.
The Lake Huron shoreline around Port Austin, Caseville, and nearby beaches creates wonderful opportunities for family portraits.
Bare feet in the sand, gentle evening light, and children playing near the water can make for beautiful, natural photographs.
Summer is also perfect for extended families gathering for vacations, reunions, and visits with grandparents.
Fall Family Photos: Golden Leaves and Cozy Colors
Fall is especially beautiful throughout Huron County.
The countryside around Ubly, Bad Axe, and nearby communities offers colorful trees, open fields, and beautiful rural backdrops.
Rich autumn colors make family portraits feel warm and timeless.
And as you can see from this family's session, you don't need elaborate decorations or a complicated location.
Sometimes all you need is a beautiful tree, a little sunshine, and the people you love.

Winter Family Photos: A Different Kind of Michigan Magic
Winter can be just as beautiful.
Snow-covered evergreens, peaceful rural scenery, and cozy winter clothing create portraits with a completely different feeling.
Winter is also a wonderful time for couples, engagement portraits, and smaller family sessions.
Every season tells a different story. The best season for your family is the one that fits the memories you want to create.
Don't Forget the Grandparents and Smaller Family Groupings
One of the most important parts of an extended family session is capturing more than the big group photograph.
Of course, I always want that beautiful portrait with everyone together.
But I also love creating images of grandparents with grandchildren, adult siblings together, couples, parents with their children, and the spontaneous moments that happen in between.
Sometimes the photograph that becomes the most treasured isn't the perfectly posed group picture.
It's Grandpa bending down to play with his granddaughter.
It's a little girl laughing on someone's shoulders.
It's the quiet expression on a parent's face while holding their child.
Those are the moments I never want families to forget.
Five Ways to Make Your Extended Family Photo Session Easier
1. Coordinate clothing ahead of time. Choose your color palette early and share it with every household. A quick photograph of the outfits laid out together can help you see whether everything works.
2. Plan around the youngest children. Happy, rested little ones make a big difference. Try to avoid nap times and bring a small snack or favorite comfort item.
3. Think about the photographs you want most. Is there a special grandparent-and-grandchild portrait you've always wanted? An updated photograph of all the adult siblings? Let me know before the session.
4. Don't stress over perfect behavior. Children laugh, run, wiggle, and sometimes decide they have their own ideas. That's part of the experience, and those spontaneous moments can become some of the sweetest photographs.
5. Enjoy being together. Your family doesn't need to be perfect to create beautiful portraits. You just need to show up, love on one another, and let me take care of the photographs.

When I think about this family, I don't just remember one beautiful afternoon in Ubly.
I remember a Sweet 16 birthday, three senior portrait sessions, two weddings, and all the years that brought us to this moment.
I think about how fortunate I am to be trusted with memories that matter so much.
And I hope that years from now, when this little girl in red is grown, these photographs will help her see just how loved she has always been.
That's what family photography means to me.
