There is something we have learned after years of photographing families:
Never underestimate a grandma on a mission to get all of her grandchildren together for a photograph.
Not a scheduling mix-up.
Not five busy little people.
Not a Saturday morning forecast filled with rain.
And apparently, not even Mother Nature herself.
This beautiful family session at the Sand Point community near Caseville, Michigan, had just about everything working against it for a minute. But looking through these photographs now, you would never know it.
You see grandparents smiling beside the water.
You see little bare feet in the grass.
You see cousins sitting together on a blanket.
You see children running circles around Grandma and Grandpa.
You see a toddler holding someone's hand.
You see brothers leaning into one another.
You see laughter.
And you see the kind of beautiful chaos that happens when several generations of a family are together in one place.
That's exactly why we love photographing family photos at Sand Point.
Because someday, the chaos is the part you're going to miss most.
It Started With a Slight Scheduling Problem…
We have to tell this part of the story because it makes the session even better.
J had planned this family photography session around having her grandchildren together at Sand Point.
There was just one tiny problem.
She accidentally booked the session for Friday morning.
Her grandchildren weren't all going to be there until Friday night.
😂
Details, details.
We can laugh about it now, but anyone who has ever tried coordinating an extended family knows exactly how easily something like this happens.
One family is driving in.
Someone else has work.
The kids have schedules.
People are coming from different directions.
Someone needs a nap.
Someone needs breakfast.
Someone inevitably forgot something.
And Grandma is trying to keep track of everybody.
When we realized what had happened, there wasn't any question about what we needed to do.
We moved the session.
Thankfully, Melonie and Tim were able to rearrange things at the last minute and get everyone photographed Saturday morning instead.
Problem solved.
Well…
Almost.
Because then we checked the weather.
Mother Nature Had Her Own Plans for Our Family Photos at Sand Point
Saturday morning arrived with one of those Michigan skies that makes a photographer check the radar approximately 847 times.
Rain was coming.
Not maybe coming.
Coming.
We had a window before the heavier weather moved into the Caseville area, so we decided to work with what Mother Nature gave us.
And that is one of the advantages of working with experienced photographers.
Perfect conditions are wonderful.
But real life isn't always perfect.
Sometimes the sky is cloudy.
Sometimes there is wind.
Sometimes the toddler isn't interested in your photography plans.
Sometimes Grandma accidentally schedules the session before the grandchildren arrive.
And sometimes you have about an hour before Michigan decides to dump buckets of water from the sky.
That's okay.
We can work with that.
There were a few sprinkles during this Sand Point family photography session, but nothing that stopped us.
In fact, the soft overcast morning gave us beautiful, even light across the water and that gorgeous saturated green Michigan grass.
The lake was calm.
The children were ready to play.
Grandma and Grandpa were surrounded by their babies.
And we photographed.
Shortly after we finished?
The real rain arrived.
We made it.
Sometimes photography is about knowing your camera.
Sometimes it's about understanding light.
And sometimes it's about looking at the radar and saying, "Everybody outside. NOW." 😂
But This Session Wasn't Really About the Weather
The weather makes a fun story.
The scheduling mix-up makes an even better one.
But neither is what these photographs are actually about.
They're about Grandma.
They're about the reason she wanted these photographs in the first place.
They're about looking around one day and realizing that these little people aren't going to stay little.
That realization seems to hit grandparents especially hard.
Parents are living in the middle of childhood.
They're packing lunches, washing clothes, finding missing shoes, driving to activities, getting everyone bathed, breaking up arguments and trying to remember whether tomorrow is pajama day at school.
Grandparents get to see childhood from a slightly different perspective.
They already know.
They know how fast it goes.
Grandma remembers when her own babies were this small.
She remembers little hands.
First steps.
Bedtime stories.
School pictures.
Missing teeth.
Teenage years.
Graduations.
And then somehow those babies grew up…
…and gave her more babies to love.
That's what we see when we look at these photographs.
A family story continuing.
One Day, They Won't Run Circles Around Grandma
Some of our favorite photographs from this session aren't the perfectly posed ones.
They're the photographs where the children are simply being children.
Running.
Laughing.
Moving.
Playing around Grandma and Grandpa beside the water.
Those images are priceless to us.
Because think about what Grandma sees right now.
She probably sees energetic little bodies going in five different directions.
Someone isn't looking.
Someone is running away.
Someone wants Grandma.
Someone wants Grandpa.
Someone is laughing.
Someone else has decided they are absolutely DONE with whatever the adults are trying to accomplish.
It's chaos.
Beautiful, wonderful chaos.
But imagine looking at that photograph 20 years from now.
Those little boys will be grown men.
Those tiny girls will be young women.
They'll have lives of their own.
They may have families of their own.
And suddenly that photograph of children running wildly around their grandparents won't look chaotic at all.
It will look like childhood.

Of course, we photograph the traditional portraits too.

Those Bare Feet in the Grass Won't Always Be Little
Look closely at photographs of young families and you'll notice something.
It's often the tiniest details that become the most meaningful later.
Little bare feet.
A tiny ponytail with a bow.
Glasses slipping slightly down a little boy's nose.
A crooked smile.
A hand wrapped around Grandma's finger.
The way one brother naturally leans toward another.
The toddler who needs someone's hand to walk through the grass.
The baby sitting safely on a soft blanket while all the big kids surround her.
Those details seem ordinary right now.

Children change so quickly that sometimes we don't notice it happening.

The rain came.
But it didn't matter anymore.

Actually, we're pretty sure that part will become family folklore. 😂
What will matter is that Grandma wanted photographs of her family.
