Recently, Tim and I had the opportunity to photograph a beautiful Garber High School senior from the Bay City area, and her session is such a great example of what we want the Beechwood senior experience to become known for throughout Michigan.
We photographed everything from a feminine dress in a natural field setting to jeans and the cutest salmon-colored top near the beach. Then, when most photographers would have called the session finished, we headed into downtown Bay City after dark.
Our final stop?
Jake's Corner Lounge for Bay City's famous under-the-lights senior portraits.
One senior.
Multiple completely different looks.
Natural Michigan scenery, beach photographs, fashion, movement, downtown lights and nighttime portraits.
But the most important thing running through every part of the session wasn't the location.
It was confidence.

Clothing isn't an afterthought in our senior sessions.
It's one of the tools we use to tell your story.
For this Bay City senior portrait session, our senior brought two outfits that gave us two completely different moods.
Her first look featured a beautiful dress from Altar'd State.
It was feminine, youthful and perfect for photographs where we could incorporate movement and the natural landscape.
A dress changes the way someone moves in photographs.
Fabric creates motion.
The silhouette creates shape.
Even the way you walk changes.
Instead of photographing the outfit as something you're simply wearing, we use it as part of the photograph.
Her second outfit was completely different: an adorable salmon top paired with jeans.
That gave us a casual, youthful look that worked beautifully for the beach and field portions of her session.
Same senior.
Same day.
Completely different energy.
That's why we encourage our seniors to think beyond simply choosing their "favorite outfit."
Ask instead:
What different sides of me do I want my senior portraits to show?
Maybe one outfit is elegant.
Another is casual.
One might be edgy.
Another might feel romantic.
You might love vintage fashion, current trends, athletic clothing, dramatic gowns, cowboy boots, leather jackets or something nobody else would think of wearing for senior pictures.

Instead of scrolling Pinterest for three weeks wondering what photographs well, we're bringing fashion and photography together.

and the ability to photograph beautifully.
The goal isn't to turn every senior into somebody she isn't.
It's exactly the opposite.

From a Michigan Field to the Beach
One of the reasons we love photographing seniors in Michigan is the amount of variety we can create without traveling hundreds of miles.
Our Bay City session gave us beautiful natural scenery where the focus could stay on our senior.
Fields create softness and simplicity.
The beach brings movement, wind, texture and a completely different Michigan feel.
And that's something we want to incorporate into more of our Michigan senior portrait experiences.
Beechwood Photography is based in Cass City, but we photograph throughout Michigan's Thumb, Bay City and the Lake Huron shoreline.
That gives our seniors an interesting opportunity.
Your session doesn't necessarily have to happen entirely in your hometown.
We can create an experience.
Imagine beginning with fashion-forward studio portraits in our Cass City studio.
Then changing outfits and heading toward Caseville or Port Crescent.
We finish with sunset along Lake Huron.
Or we travel toward Bay City and finish underneath downtown lights.

Then Bay City Changed Completely After Dark
One of my favorite things about this particular session was that we didn't stop when the sun disappeared.
Instead, we headed downtown.
Downtown Bay City gives us an entirely different visual environment than a beach or field.
Architecture.
Street lights.
Storefronts.
Reflections.
Urban textures.
And after dark, an entirely different kind of portrait becomes possible.
Our destination was Jake's Corner Lounge, a recognizable downtown Bay City location where the lights create an incredible nighttime backdrop.
Suddenly our natural, airy senior session became dramatic.
This is where understanding lighting becomes incredibly important.
Night photography isn't simply daytime photography with less light.
We can control the light falling on our senior while allowing the ambient lights of downtown Bay City to become part of the composition.
The result feels completely different from the images we created earlier that day.
And that's exactly the point.
Your senior gallery shouldn't feel like we photographed the same picture twenty-five times.
We want you to have variety.
Behind-the-Scenes Video Is Part of the Experience
There's another part of Beechwood senior sessions that parents and seniors absolutely love:

While I'm concentrating on photography and directing our senior, Tim can capture pieces of what is actually happening around us.
